Hiking Boot in Snow

While in Fairbanks, AK, I went to Pioneer Village one day.  I was adjusting my camera to see if it was focusing ok and I took this shot of my hiking boot.  For some crazy reason, I really like this shot. It might not say what venue I'm at, but it sure says I'm in winter weather.

Structure at Pioneer Park

This log cabin structure is located within the gates of Pioneer Park in Fairbanks, Alaska.
It's currently shuttered during the winter, but is still an imposing building.
I liked the red sign on the otherwise brown building.

Lone Tree

My photo club assigned topic for Jan was Lone Tree.  It was difficult to find a "lone" tree that looked interesting, so I just scrapped the topic and entered other photos.
The Jan meeting was canceled for some reason that didn't make sense to me and rescheduled for another month, so I guess I have another chance to enter that topic.  While walking around downtown Fairbanks, I saw this tree, and others, that were separated enough from other foliage to fit the topic.
I thought this tree looked beautiful, so I tried to capture it, but there are still buildings and cars showing.
Really......it's just a snow covered fir tree, nothing special so I'm not sure I'll enter it.
I just think it's pretty against the gorgeous blue sky on a cold winter day.

Museum of the North~~University of Alaska, Fairbanks

This beautiful building is the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.  It's a gorgeous building and I've taken many photos of it in various seasons.  The large bricks are intended to mimic bricks that an igloo is made of.

Full Moon

I noticed this full moon surrounded by snow covered tress and a bare birch tree.  I made this image with my phone camera.  It looks ok as a small image, but enlarging it shows that it was a substandard camera and not my SLR.  It's still a pretty scene.

Mid-Afternoon on a Winter Day

A cold, crisp winter day.  The scene looks fake to me, but it's real.  Almost too pretty to be true.

Snow on Dirty White Fence

The fence might be dirty white, but I think the scene is pretty.

Sauna in Snow

Winter scene of a portable sauna and an outhouse in a snowy back yard.

Trees and Snow

There are times when I think I should live in the north again and take advantage of snowy scenics.  Then I come to my senses.

Snow

Today we had snow in west Texas.  It was in the forecast, but that's always iffy.
I woke up this morning to rain and then snow.
I usually only post one photo a day, but I couldn't help myself today.  I took the top photo of the snow and then about an hour later I looked out at the parking lot and saw this snowman in the yard across the way.  Sadly I didn't see who made it.
It's just cute.
Today is Thursday and by Saturday it's going to be back into the mid 50s.  I can deal with that.

Female Winter Hiker

This is from my files.  This is a friend of mine taken on a day when we hiked in the Adirondack Park of upstate NY.  I don't like winter, but those hikes we did were so much fun.  I miss them and the ladies I used to hike with.

My heart is grateful:
for the memories I have of good times with good people

I thought I was done with snow.  Visiting in Knoxville, we had to shovel the car out of 8.5 inches of snow since I'm heading to the airport this afternoon.
My friend said snow hasn't been this deep in forever~~well sure, that's the way I roll.

My heart is grateful for:
enduring friendship

Blue Shed in Snow

I've never been in Knoxville in the winter.  I didn't know it snowed here.  Good grief, this photo was taken this morning and it's late afternoon now and it's been snowing all day.  Yikes. I thought I'd be done with snow when I left the northeast, but I guess not.

My heart is grateful that:
I had one last chance to see my grandson today before heading home tomorrow~~he's doing his best to talk me into moving to TN, and he's being somewhat successful

Seen From the Airport Window

I've seen more pretty sun rises and sun sets in the winter in Alaska than I've ever seen anywhere else. This was approximately 3:30 pm.  I love the muted colors of the sky and the snow on the runway.

Museum of the North

This museum is seen on the campus of Alaska University at Fairbanks, Alaska.  It's a beautiful structure and it gives me the feeling it was constructed with the large white blocks to mimic the Alaskan heritage of igloos.  I haven't been able to document that idea, but that's what it makes me think of when I look at it.

This building is a cultural center, a museum and a learning environment.
The sun sets around 4 pm in the winter and this image was made close to that time.  The light was beautiful and the sky was such a pretty blue.

White Birch and Hammocks

I came upon this scene today at a friend's home.  I only had my cell phone with me. I hope to go back with my big-girl camera.  I'd love to make this into a canvas to hang in my home.
I can probably name it something like:
"Dreaming of Spring"
"Summer Dreams"
"Waiting to Relax"
or something like that.

23/365   Night Scene

I very recently got a new phone.

During all the times I've visited Fairbanks I've never seen the Northern Lights.  I hope to see them this trip, so tonight I went outside around 10:45 pm (it gets pitch dark around 4 pm during the winter).  There were no "lights" then, probably because of the heavy cloud cover, but I wanted to try the phone camera in the dark to see how it well it photographed at night.

This is looking south.  It's amazing.  The image can't be blown up too large because it would be too grainy, but what a great job it does for small pics.

 19/365   Snowy Mailboxes

It's cold here, very cold.  When I made this image it was -32, but fortunately there was no wind.  The snow was crunchy, a sound I love even though I don't love snow, the air was crisp and it was the middle of the 4 hours of daylight so the light was really lovely.

Now that it's Dec 22, daylight will last longer each day until it's light for 23 hours/day.  What a difference.
